Registered office address rules
What UK company law requires from a registered office, whether a serviced or virtual office qualifies, and how to change yours without causing problems.
The rule
What counts as an appropriate address
Every UK company must have a registered office address, and since the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act it must be an "appropriate address". In plain terms that means a document delivered there would come to the attention of someone acting for the company, and delivery can be acknowledged — somebody signs for it. It must be a full physical address in the part of the UK where the company is registered.
A staffed serviced office or a virtual office with mail handling satisfies that comfortably, which is why both are so widely used. A PO Box alone does not. An address you have no permission to use does not either, and using one is a fast route to a compliance problem.

Important: where this page uses the words “rent”, “rental”, “lease” or “let” to describe workspace, those terms are used for descriptive and search purposes only. The agreement offered by flexible workspace operators is a licence to occupy, not a lease or tenancy, and it does not confer security of tenure under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954.
